How the Rotary Club of Kasangati was formed:
It all started as a friendly club “BUMU CLUB” translated as “TOGETHERNESS CLUB”. The club consisted of 16 members all from Nangabo Sub County. The members used to meet at “Kayebe Source Packers”, a food processing factory owned by Mr. Emmanuel Katende (RIP). For the club to be introduced to Rotary International a resident lost a wife and among mourners was Rtn. Robert Rutaagi from Rotary Club of Kampala- the oldest club and Rtn. Joel Sekabembe from Rotary Club of Kampala East. A prominent member of the Bumu club, Hon. Sam Njuba (RIP) invited Rtn. Robert and Rtn. Joel for a drink at Kayebe Source Packers and as Rotarians they had an opportunity to meet other members of the Bumu Club. It was during this interaction that the idea of forming a Rotary Club from Bumu Club was tabled. The first assignment for the Bumu Club was to identify different professions within the community who are ready to provide voluntary services to change lives for the unprivileged.
Bumu Club continued meeting while doing its assignment and on 3rd September 2001 the Bumu Club had increased its membership from 16 to 37 members. With the increase in membership, Bumu Club was given a new name “The Provisional Club of Kasangati”. As a provisional club, the meeting venue changed from Kayebe Source Packers to Kasangati Resort Centre to accommodate the increasing membership. Members of the provisional club agreed to meet every Monday 7:00pm – 8:00pm at Kasangati Resort Centre. The Rotary International District Governor then appointed Rtn. Joel Sekabembe as the District Governor’s Special Representative and Rotary Club of Kampala East became the mother club for the Provisional Rotary Club of Kasangati. September 29, 2001 saw the election of officers for the Provisional Rotary Club of Kasangati as per RI constitution and bylaws. On September 12, 2002, Rotary Club of Kasangati was officially admitted to Rotary International with thirty-two members. Seventeen years after its charter, the Rotary Club of Kasangati still exists with 52 members of whom ……. are men and …… women. Out of the 52 members the club is privileged to still have 2 active charter members. These include: Past President Ben Sekamatte and Past President Thoephilus Mukasa Kaddu. One charter member is still in contact with the club that is Past President Gadi Gumisiriza currently a member of Rotary Club of Mbarara.
A group of Rotarians led by Rtn. Robert Rutaagi visited a friendly group and encouraged them to mobilise more members to form a Rotary club. The members embraced the idea, invited more people, who continued to meet under the mentorship of Rotary Club of Kampala East. The District Governor’s Special Representative was Past Assistant Governor Joel Ssekabembe. On September 3, 2002, Rotary Club of Kasangati was officially admitted to Rotary International with thirty-two members.
